Lorde made a surprise appearance at this evening's BRIT Awards, performing 'Life On Mars' in a special tribute to David Bowie. The internet's response - for once - was almost universally positive.
The pair were photographer together at Tilda Swinton's 53rd bithday party back in 2013, and Lorde subsequently revealed that Bowie told her that her music sounded 'like listening to tomorrow', while the two held hands and gazed into each other's eyes."
So it was a fitting decision to recruit her to pay tribute to Bowie at this year's BRITs, following his unexpected death last month.
The Twitter reaction to Lorde's performance was overwhelmingly positive.
Fearless wonderful @lorde. I couldn’t look anywhere other than straight at her. Great job. So so so so so much better than the Gaga thing.

Lorde a great choice, she spoke very touchingly about meeting David Bowie and how he inspired her: https://t.co/qTX4P6kSL8 #BRITs2016 #Bowie

Lorde is so brave to say yes to singing this, so many people completely adore Bowie, must be absolutely terrifying to sing it in his honour

This Lorde tribute to Bowie is already nine hundred times less cringe than the Gaga one, mainly because it FOCUSES ON BOWIE. #BRITs2016

Prior to the performance, Annie Lennox and Gary Oldman paid tribute to Bowie in heartfelt speeches, which you can read in full here.
