Papa Wemba, one of the most famous Congolese musicians, has died after collapsing onstage. Watch footage of the incident below.

The 66-year-old, who was hugely influential in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and was a member of the band Viva La Musica, was in the middle of a show in Ivory Coast over the weekend when he slumped onto the floor behind a group of dancers.

The dancers, and several people from off stage, quickly rushed to his side, before a medic arrived at the scene. Bemba died before he could be brought to a hospital. The incident was broadcast on local TV.

Speaking of Wemba, BBC 1Xtra’s DJ Edu said, “I would put him in the same bracket as Fela Kuti when it comes to influence on African music.”
