Japanese popstar Mayu Tomita is in critical condition after being stabbed more than 20 times by a ‘fan’.
The 20-year-old singer was waiting to perform in Tokyo when Tomohiro Iwazaki - about whom she is said to have complained to the police last month - reportedly approached her, angry that she had returned a gift he had sent her.
According to reports, he then stabbed her in the neck and chest nearly two dozen times, telling police who eventually arrived on the scene, “I lost my temper because she didn’t clearly answer” questions about the gift.
Tomita had been working as a pop singer and actor while she completed her college studies.
This isn’t the first time a young female popstar has been attacked by a male fan in the country - in 2014, for example, two members of AKB48 were attacked by a man wielding a saw at one of their meet & greets.
