Ziggy Marley has unveiled a mini-documentary, The Making Of: Ziggy Marley, ahead of the release of his self-titled new album. Watch it first on Gigwise below.
Though Ziggy - like his father Bob before him - will always be inextricably linked with reggae, it’s far from his only influence. “Our music is all over the place,” he explains in the short film. “Reggae is the foundation, but we’re not limited to what people think something should be. When we play my reggae it’s expressed in my way. This is how I express reggae.”
Marley’s self-titled sixth album, which he also produced, follows 2014’s critically acclaimed Fly Rasta. He began crafting it in his bedroom and home studio, noting down every idea that came to him. “They’re all connected,” he said, “and it opened up the scope.”
"I learned how to be more free and not to hesitate when it comes to exploring musical ideas. There’s a big difference lyrically. With my new record, I wanted to address my feelings about what’s happening outside of myself and in the world, how I see what I see, and solutions I have in mind. It’s very confident and direct. My fingerprint is on it more deeply. The world needs this message.”
Ziggy Marley releases his self-titled sixth album on 20 May.
