Christopher Owens, former singer of San Francisco lo-fi indie kids Girls, has unveiled a brand-new track from sessions with latest band Curls ahead of an EP release and west coast US tour this November.
‘Emotion’, which you can listen to via Pitchfork, will be familiar to longtime Owens fans in terms of its garage aesthetic and laconic Bay Area delivery. However, the sound is notably fatter out than Girls’ skinny surfer vibe, thanks largely to Owens’ more snarling guitar, now blanketed in piano and mellotron, plus several layers of vocal overdubbed and artfully flanged by producer/engineer Shane Stoneback. Cody Rhodes plays drums/percusssion, and Luke Bacé takes on bass duty.
New EP ‘Vante’ is expected to drop on November 7 courtesy of Urban Scandal Records.
Girls formed in San Francisco back in 2007, and after debut LP ‘Album’ (2009) and the critically acclaimed ‘Father, Son, Holy Ghost’ 2011. They split in 2012 with Owens citing his frustration over regular lineup changes – at one point that fully 21 people had been in and out of the band during its relatively short life.
Owens went on to release well-received solo efforts ‘Lysandre’ (2013), ‘A New Testament’ (2014), and ‘Chrissybaby Forever’ (2015).
