Embrace - 'I Can't Come Down' (Independiente) Released 04/12/06
In the late 90’s Embrace were at the forefront of some of the most rousing indie pop songs of the Britpop era. Tracks like ‘My Weakness is None of Your Business’ and ‘Save Me’ are perhaps amongst some of the best indie-pop songs to come out of the UK in that era, but, in recent years Embrace have lost the magic that made their music worthy of the praise it received. ‘I Can’t Come Down’ is yet another attempt to recreate the almost spiritual excitement of pre – ‘If You’ve Ever Been’ artistic success, and is the third single from the ‘This New’ Day. Their profile may well be on the increase with a younger generation of music fans, but their reliance on familiar structure and musical arrangement to build the track to a fully string laden crescendo, lacks the passion to make the track an inspirational audio experience. Regurgitating the theme of lost love, Danny McNamara’s vocals are at once beautiful, engaging and convincing, but are altogether not enough to reignite the Embrace fireworks.
