Calvin Harris – ‘Acceptable In The 80s’ (Columbia) Released 12/03/07

starstarstarhalf starno star

With its dirty bass beat from start to finish mixed with funky sythesized nonsense this electro/disco offering by Dumfries DJ Calvin Harris is certain to be a big club hit and dancefloor filler. It’s a bit Scissor Sisters crossed with LCD Soundsystem and as the title suggests carry an 80’s nostalgia which will ensure it brings a smile to every pretty much everyone from that era; exactly the target audience then.

The only downside is that you just know that it will be played so much in clubs eager to show they are the cutting edge of cool that in a few months you will be running away with your ears covered screaming “ahhhh not this again”. But that is the future. Now it is well worth dancing your feet off to.

  • To the reviewer: what’s a ”bass beat”? I’ve heard of a ”beat” and a ”bassline”, but they’re not the same thing. And second point: anyone old enough to feel any amount of nostalgia for the 80s would have to be at least in their mid-thirties by now - clearly not the target audience. Irritatingly uninformed review.

  • Even those of us in our mid 30s can still hear sufficiently well to tell that this is an ace tune.

  • Andy I am 26 and can recall nearly all of the 80’s...even collecting the Panini sticker book in 1984. The review is pretty accurate too in that it is getting annoying now...much like you Andy.

  • Anyone noticed ’acceptable in the 80’s’ and ’vegas’ use the same tune? that’s weak, i expect a bit of recycling of beats/basslines etc in electronic music, but not on the same album.
