Lewisham-based producer, multi-instrumentalist and all round musical whiz Paul White has dropped a trippy, kaleidoscopic video for his new track Spare Gold, featuring Zimbabwe/American poet and chanteuse Shungudzo.

Despite White’s well-known adoration of samples – best evidenced on Detroit rapper Danny Brown’s progressive tour de force Atrocity Exhibition (2006) – on this outing he’s playing all the instruments himself.

Skittering drums, twinkling synths and a glamorous, glossy bassline underpin the queenly tones of Shungudzo, regretfully musing on her parlous financial state.

According to White: ‘whilst we were in the early stages of writing Spare Gold, Shun got an email saying her health insurance in the States was going up. This sparked the lines "cant afford a doctor" and "what the hell is savings", and we talked about things that keep you from feeling like a kid.’

The video, directed and animate by Ruff Mercy (Run The Jewels, Lily Allen, Danny Brown) touches on the lyrical themes of the rat race and money pouring away down a never-sated plughole.

‘The song hints at things that can keep away the feeling of rejuvenation, how things can keep you repressed, detached, but it’s also possible to let go of those things and take a more joyful approach to life.”’

As well as Shungudzo, the LP will feature guest vocals by Denai Moore and Sarah Williams White.

White, who has also worked with Charlie XCX, Jamie Woon and Open Mike Cage, will release his seventh studio album ‘Rejuvenate’ at the end of April.
