Expect five solo songs for 'future release'

Some good news and bad news for fans of metal titans System Of A Down - vocalist Serj Tankian has confirmed that new music is on the way, but it’s likely to be for a solo EP.

Taking to Instagram, Tankian posted a photo of a mug by mixing console saying: “A weekend of mixing. Mixing coffee to finalise the perfect blend for Kavat Coffee espresso blend and mixing some rock songs for a future release.”

Tankian has already said new material from System Of A Down was unlikely. Speaking to the PRP earlier during the summer, he said: “I have five rock songs that I wanted I do with System Of A Down, but it doesn’t look like that’s gonna work out, so I am finishing those up to release them as a solo EP or possibly as a soundtrack for my film cause they are interrelated.”

It’s now been an incredible 13 years since System Of a Down released their last two albums, Mezmerize and Hypnotize, which both came out in 2005 within six months of each other.

It’s still unknown if any new material will ever emerge from the Grammy Award-winning band. Conflicting statements from different members of the band would suggest that we’re still some way off before anything actually gets released.

Speaking in 2016, drummer John Dolmayan reckoned that work had started on a new record: “We’ve been working on a new album for the last six months and there’s about 15 songs that I think are album-worthy. We don’t know what’s happening in terms of release, it’s still not 100% as far as plans go.

“I want everyone on board and feeling good about it, that’s what we’re trying to accomplish right now. There’s a tremendous amount of pressure on us.”

More recently, though, guitarist Daron Malakian blamed Tankian for holding things up.

So, with this in mind, it’s fair to say that a solo Serj Tankian EP and the prospect of Satan skating to work are more likely than any new albums from System Of Down.
