Tame Impala is back with the first new music since the acclaimed 2015 album Currents.
Released today on Fiction records, the track ‘Patience’ is a luscious, expansive piece weaving elements of 90s house with 70s disco into their psych pop DNA. Parker’s languid vocals, which float on top of the mesmerisingly diverse sonic backdrop, evoke a loose, happy feeling that make this new cut a good soundtrack to the changing seasons.
As for the lyrics, there’s a nod to the passing of time, which, on one hand, implies the writer reflecting on his own mortality. On the other, it can be read as a hippyish sense of wonderment with nature.
The release coincides with Tame Impala’s unstoppable rise in the music industry. They kick off a monumental festival summer (see full tour dates below) by headlining Coachella next month. Before that, the purveyors of transcendental sonic innovation and high-octane groove make their Saturday Night Live debut next weekend (30 March).
Though 'Patience' is the first new material since 2015 for Tame Impala, the band haven’t been quiet at all. Just busy making music under different monikers. For instance, members of Parker's backing band in Tame Impala are also busy with Pond. Synthesist Jay Watson’s been doing a solo project called GUM. And Kevin Parker’s been a studio hack for some big projects; including: Travis Scott, SZA, Lady Gaga, Mark Ronson, Kanye West, Kali Uchis, Theophilus London, Miguel, A$AP Rocky and more. Impressive stuff, sure, but it's great to have him back in the spotlight and out of the studio.
