More about: Liverpool Sound City
Gigwise have been paying more than a passing interest in Central and Eastern Europe’s music scene over the past couple of years, and for good reasons too.
Diversity and eclecticism rules, with no holds barred or perceived boundaries put in place. Which means festivals such as MENT Ljubljana, Tallinn Music Week, Station Narva and Sharpe thrive in their encouragement of anything and everything rather than chasing mainstream trends.
Indeed it was at the latter – Bratislava’s Sharpe Festival – where we initially discovered Slovakian five-piece 52 Hertz Whale. Their adrenaline fuelled brand of post-punk switches from high-octane noise rock with elements of prototype grunge to melodic post-rock at regular intervals. Drawing comparisons with the likes of Screaming Trees – somewhat notably down to vocalist Dominik Prok’s sub-Lanegan rasp – Smashing Pumpkins and Explosions In The Sky among others. They represent yet another hidden gem in Eastern Europe’s burgeoning underground music scene.
Formed in Bratislava four years ago, they’ve released a couple of EPs so far, the most recent being I’ve Met A Lot Of People at the tail end of 2017.
This week sees them put out a brand new single entitled ‘Fish In The Dead Sea’, and we urge you to turn up the speakers and listen intently to its potent mix of brooding intensity and delirious hooklines for your pleasure.
What’s more, they’re about to venture over to the UK for the very first time this weekend, playing the Funnel Music stage in Brick Street Garden at Liverpool Sound City on Sunday 5 May.
Elsewhere at Liverpool Sound City you can check out the line-up for the Gigwise stage here.
