Picture the scene. The sun is just rising, there’s a crisp, sweet smell that floats along on the early morning breeze, and the long blades of grass weave in and out of the gaps in your toes, coating your feet in a cooling sheen of moisture. The only movement is that of the grass in your wake, and the occasional flutter of a swooping bird drifting along on the thermals.

That’s exactly how Seasick Steve, armed with only his acoustic guitar, a steel guitar slide and a belly full of blues, paints an evocative picture of those raw moments, with his powerful, time-weathered voice and vivid lyrics. Steve’s sound cuts instantly through to the core of music in all its primeval glory, and it’s as stirring and raw as his early material, that saw him receive widespread acclaim.

Always the charismatic and compelling storyteller, Seasick opts for an acoustic approach to this track that captures the Americana spirit of those early touring carnivals. About the track, he comments, “I love that time early in the mornings when you’re at summer festivals, and you can just walk around when everything’s really quiet and still. That’s where the line about morning dew on the grass comes from.”

This new single is accompanied by visuals that compile fascinating archive footage of carnival culture in the 50s directed by filmmaker and fan Lee Wiffen, showing elephants, trapeze artists and human cannonballs. Watch on Gigwise here first:

‘Carni Days’ is the third single plucked from the forthcoming album Love & Peace arriving 24 July, which sees Steve reconfigure the formula for his sound and rearranging the core elements, while still pledging his allegiance to his beloved blues. Longtime fans won’t be disappointed…
