UPDATE: We're delighted to share news gathered by the Manchester Evening News this afternoon that venues the Deaf Institute and Gorilla have both been saved from permanent closure.

The Factory owners Tokyo Industries have promised that both Gorilla and Deaf Institute have been purchased so they can stay "at the forefront of the live music and club scene" the M.E.N report.

Some excellent news for your Tuesday, eh!

It follows last week's (16 July 2020) news of both venues' closure:

Very sad news just in from the Manchester Evening News: beloved venues Deaf Institute and Gorilla are both closing due to the adverse effects of the coronavirus crisis. The local paper reported the news this afternoon.

Fans of live music from Manchester, the UK and the world are mourning the news that both of these special venues will be closing. Parent company Mission Mars confimed the news this afternoon. Bosses described it as a "difficult decision" taken with "great sadness", the M.E.N reports.

Over the years, Gigwise has seen many a gig at both of these venues.

Last year, we marvelled at Julia Jacklin on the Gorilla stage and got sweaty in the mosh pit for Amyl and the Sniffers at the venue, which opened in 2011. We also caught Blood Red Shoes there in 2019.

The Deaf Institue was the site of an "exhilarating" Unknown Mortal Orchestra gig in 2013 and a solo showcase by Carl Barat in 2010 among countless others.

We mourn the loss of these two independent venues along with the rest of the music community.
