Vocals can progress a track better than anything else

The approach taken by bands in order to produce rhythm and melody in their music depends entirely on what their mindset is. When you look at classic rock, it’s very guitar heavy, drum and bass relies on… well… you guessed it, and then you have OCNS. In their new single ‘How Late It Was,’ the band really show how vocals can be used as a means to progress a song.

When you turn on the new single, you’re going to be met with a calm sounding guitar, almost surf like, and gentle backing vocals. After that, when the first verse comes in and the track progresses, musically, there isn’t much of a change. There are instruments added and taken away, but the melody remains fairly consistent throughout. Sounds boring for a 4-minute song, right? Well, the bands use of vocals are what keeps things interesting.

The melody in the vocals changes from verse to verse and become more stoic and fluid as the song moves along. There are also backing lyrical riffs in place of guitars which provide a really interesting undertone to the song. It’s by no means acapella, but it takes the good parts of acapella music and combines them with a fuller sound to make it less annoying.

The band themselves admit that when they write, they plan on providing a “soundscape rich in catchy melody, infectious groove and emotional input.” They certainly mange to achieve this in their new song which is equal parts catchy and fun as it is calm and soothing.
