Packing a predictable punch

Music goes through trends and ever since Olivia Rodrigo dropped the single ‘good 4 u’ that trend has been revenge tracks in a pop punk format. PENNY X’s new song is a lot of fun to listen to, it’s catchy, full-bodied and will be excellent in a live environment, but to suggest it deviates in any way from this cookie cutter trend of the past year would be misleading.

The song begins with a constant guitar plucking before heavy electronic drums come in. Steady. Sporadic. Far apart. Accompanied by the opening lyrics which go with the straightforward story-telling style that PENNY X uses to describe herself. The song talks about an ex and how he has moved on and is happy with his new girlfriend.

“I’m not an angry person at all, but at that moment I had to think of how my ex had just posted these cute couple pics and even moved in with his new girlfriend – something he would’ve never done with me.” She said, “seeing him treating her so much better than he ever treated me made me really mad and then it felt like the song just started writing itself.”

This song doesn’t lend itself to much exploration. It’s a style that is getting a bit predictable now and needs some kind of revamping in order to stand out in a crowded sound. That being said, with relatable lyrics and production that packs a punch, there’s no doubt it will find an adoring audience.
