Cinematic disco (yes, it's a thing)

The history of disco is quite an interesting one. On the one hand it was one of the most popular genres out there, on the other it limited artists and stopped them from being able to truly express themselves and create something innovative. It essentially put a glass ceiling on creativity given it was the disco formula that worked and therefore it was the formula that needed to be followed. As time progresses, the means by which people can make music evolves, and evolution in disco can be seen in the new single by Milky Chance ‘Living In A Haze’.

The amount of atmosphere that is built throughout the tune is truly inspired. This begins in the first few minutes as trickling strings are accompanied with a low rumbling subby bass which sounds like it’s about the introduction to a sci fi epic. This builds and drops, throwing the listener onto a lit-up dancefloor wearing white flares and throwing shapes.

The chorus is where the disco elements get incredibly innovative as those trickling notes at the beginning are replaced with a synth, which means that the funk element is still there but thanks to the progression of the notes sounds almost cinematic. This is all added to with the solemn lyrics ‘dance the pain away.’

“Sometimes you lose track of what’s important,” said Milky Chance talking about the single, “live day by day distracted and don’t really know how to get out of it. At the same time it seems like everybody around you does not feel that way, life looks so easy when they do it and a desire builds up to have it just like that. So this one’s for all who wanna be able to dance the pain away.”

The single comes out as Milky chance are preparing to embark on their tour of Canada and the US from May to September, which will see them travel from Montreal to New York to Kansas City and much more.
