Music progresses and develops, which is great, it’s always nice to hear something brand new and innovative. That being said, what’s wrong with a good old throwback every now and then as well? This is exactly what you’ll get when you listen to the new single by Sofia Ford, ‘Under The Water.’

The single opens up with persistent bass and a plethora of pull offs and hammer ons which invoke memories of Van Halen. There isn’t the same variety you would get with Eddie, the guitar licks are a lot more repetitive as opposed to being varied, but the overall sound and style is like what they went for.

Sofia’s voice is well and truly the star of the show. It’s low and pretty rhythmic but carries with it a swagger like what you would hear in a Little Queen tune. It’s a real pleasure to listen to and sounds like the kind of thing you would expect to play when a main character is walking down the street after a badass epiphany.

“For me the son is empowering and a reminder that you shouldn’t let anyone tell you that you are not good enough,” said Sofia talking about the tune, “the song is essentially saying “you don’t think I can do it? Try me.””

There are clear classic rock influences here, which is best shown in the guitar. It’s a pentatonic performance with light distortion which sounds like a glimpse into the past. Most lines are met with a short lick afterwards which sounds good but becomes oddly repetitive and bland towards the end. These licks need to be better refined as at the moment, with their inclusion, the track sounds like a cut from a jam session as opposed to being a finished product.

Overall the song is a bit of a throwback and a lot of fun to listen to. It’s packed with swagger and sounds badass in nature. A bit more refining around the production and the use of guitar solos and Sofia is really going to cement herself as one to watch.
