Jeff Buckley's 'Hallelujah' Cover Given X Factor Chart Boost

It climbs chart...

Jeff Buckley's cover of 'Hallelujah' by Leonard Cohen has enjoyed renewed success on the UK singles chart despite not being given a physical re-release.

The song has climbed six places to number 43 after contestants sang the track on a recent edition The X Factor.

As previously reported on Gigwise, the winner of the talent contest will also release their own version as a Christmas single.

Buckley's cover originally featured on his 1994 debut album 'Grace'.

It is the second time Buckley's version of the song has enjoyed renewed chart success following an appearance on talent programmes linked to Simon Cowell.

Earlier this year, the song topped the US Billboard download chart after being sung by Jason Castro, a contestant on American Idol.

  • Great song indeed; just a shame it's about to be massacred X Factor style - the only entrant deserved to sing such a song was Diana Vickers and sadly she's no longer in it (probably cuz her fanbase are just too cool to pick up the phone and vote; that's my excuse anyway!)

  • Sales of the Buckley version are being generated by its placement in the current BBC iplayer advert. A more real protest is to purchase one of the many recordings of Hallelujah not put out by SonyBMG's label, the profiteers behind X Factor and Jeff Buckley.

  • Buckley's version is great but Jason Castro's is also heartfelt and worthy of recognition. It was Castro's rendition that caused Buckley's to be resurrected and push it to #1 on iTunes (Castro's song was unable to be released since he was a contestant on American Idol).

  • Before anyone decides to buy the X Factor cover, they may want to wait a couple of months for Jason Castro's full length version of "Hallelujah"! It is the theme song for the soon to be released movie, "Amar a Morir"! You will not regret your decision!!! His interpretation is awesome!
