Yusuf Islam: Coldplay's 'Viva La Vida' Copies My Song

He may sue the band...

Yusuf Islam has admitted that Coldplay's song 'Viva La Vida' closely matches one of his own tracks but he does not know at this point whether or not he will take legal action.

Speaking to Reuters, Islam – who used to be called Cat Stevens – said that he could see the similarities between the track and his song 'Foreigner Suite'.

He said: "My son brought it to my attention and said: 'Doesn't that sound like 'Foreigner Suite?'"

"The song definitely sounds like it. It has such logical chords and the melody has to be what it is..."

Joe Satriani is already suing Coldplay over 'Viva La Vida' track, accusing the band of copyright infringement over the similarities between the song and his track 'If I Could Fly'.

Asked if he will follow Satriani down the legal route, Islam said: "It depends on how well Satriani does."

  • Same chord sequence, and that's it. The same applies to the Satriana claim also. If bands are going to sue each other for using the same chord progressions, there'll be no songs left to write.
