Mourners have laid flowers and messages outside DJ AM's apartment building following his death on Friday.
Fans were shocked to learn of DJ AM, real name Adam Goldstein, passing away of a suspected drugs overdose and have flocked to his home to pay their condolences.
Goldstein, whose body was discovered next to what police described as a 'vessel for smoking drugs', had a history of drug abuse as described in a 2005 interview. In the interview Goldstein said, "Drugs became my identity. I would deejay until 2 a.m., go get drugs and stay up until 10 in the morning doing drugs alone in my apartment."
The DJ, who has dated Mandy Moore and Nicole Richie, claimed he became sober in 1997 after considering suicide.
Following a night of doing drugs the then 24 year old, sat in front of a mirror and "could not move away from staring at myself." He said he put a gun in his mouth and sobbing, said, "God, please help me."I pulled the trigger, and it jammed. I remember sitting there and thinking, 'You know, I can't even kill myself."
He said a friend who kicked drug addiction at the time inspired him to get sober too. DJ AM's body was discovered on Friday afternoon, police sources have said that his body was surrounded by a crack pipe and prescription pill bottles.
Ellen Borakove, a spokeswoman for the New York City Medical Examiner's Office, confirmed that an autopsy was carried out on Saturday afternoon claiming further tests, including toxicology tests, still needed to be carried out.
She added that it may be several weeks before medics can confirm what killed the star.
