George Michael has responded to the close of the News Of The World newspaper, which will publish its last ever edition on Sunday (July 10), saying that it is 'fantastic day for Britain'.
The Sunday paper is to close following claims that it hacked into the phones of murdered schoolgirl Milly Dowler and family members of 7/7 bombing victims.
In a series of Tweets the singer accused News of the World editor Rebekah Brooks of corruption: ''Rebekah Brooks sat two feet from me in my own home and told me that it was never the public that came to them with information or celebrities, and that the police always got there first.''
He added: "I believe every individual, whether privileged or the average citizen, deserves the law. And many of us, rich or poor, have been denied it by News International."
''For many, many years. Like I said, today is a FANTASTIC day for Britain. XXX''
In a statement, News International chairman James Murdoch said the paper's good qualities “have been sullied by behaviour that was wrong - indeed, if recent allegations are true, it was inhuman and has no place in our company".
The News of The World, published every Sunday, was founded in 1843.
