More about:

A Sony distribution centre in North London that carries stock belonging to several independent music labels has been damaged by fire.

The three-storey warehouse in Enfield caught fire overnight in an area of the capital which has seen widespread rioting and looting.

The building is Sony Corp's sole distribution base in the UK and is also home to PIAS Distribution, which works closely with independent record labels.

Those affected by the fire include DJ and producer Rob Da Bank's label, Sunday Best, and Young Turks, which is home to the likes of SBTRKT and The xx.

On Twitter, Rob Da Bank wrote: “So looks like all our Sunday Best stock went up in flames last night in the PIAS blaze.”

Although the extent of the damage is currently unclear, there are already fears about the possible implications the fire could have on the independent music industry in the UK.

For instance, PIAS is the biggest distributor for Rough Trade Record shops.

A spokeswoman for Sony Corp told Reuters: "There will likely be some impact on deliveries.

“We cannot determine the cause of the fire or the extent of the damage yet because it's not possible to enter the building.”

The riots in London began on Saturday (August 6) in Tottenham and spread to south London on Sunday (7).

Last night, parts of Hackney, Croydon and Camden were also affected, while violence and looting was reported in Birmingham, Manchester and Liverpool.
