Speaking to Gigwise at The Hospital Club in London, where the ceremony took place, Levine spoke in depth about this year's shortlist, particularly regarding the diversity of genres and general youthfulness between the 12 acts.
The presented explained: "We've got I think eight debut albums on this year's shortlist, I can't think of a better way to say than this year's list is ahead of the curve".
This year's nominees ranged from Royal Blood through to FKA Twigs, with the likes of East India Youth and Kate Tempest also favourites to scoop the title.
The winner of The Mercury Prize 2014 will be announced on 29 September.
