Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, an Indian pop star and leader of spiritual organisation Dera Sacha Sauda, has been accused of encouraging hundreds of men to be castrated in order to be closer to God.

Singh, who has released six religious rock albums in his career, the most recent of which sold almost three million copies in three days, is also a religious leader and guru. His influence has reportedly led 400 men to remove their testicles in an effort to meet God.

According to India Today, the Central Bureau of Investigation has collected important evidence against Singh, despite initially encountering difficulties in persuading victims to cooperate - such was the DSS's power.

As The Independent reports,Singh denied the allegations during a press conference for his new film, saying, "Such allegations disturb me, when I am doing good for humanity. Therefore me and my legal advisor are going to move the court challenging the allegations."

The castrations were said to be carried out mainly at a hospital run by the DSS in Singh's ancestral village of Gurusar Modia, in Rajasthan.
