Daphne and Celeste, without question the most controversial performers in Reading Festival's history, have returned with their first single in 15 years. Listen to 'You And I Alone' below.
The comeback single is produced by Max Tundra (who has previously supported Hot Chip and remixed Franz Ferdinand) who contacted the pop pair on Twitter. The duo - real Karen DiConcetto and Celeste Cruz - have produced a remarkably tasteful new track, with a distince Marina Diamandis feel and references to cassettes, Twin Peaks and David Foster Wallace.
Naturally it reminded us of the bygone time in 2000 where the duo were booked for a controversial performance at Reading Festival, only to be bottled off. In an interview with the Guardian Tundra explains: “It would have been easier to pick someone really respected like Charlotte Gainsbourg … but this was more of a challenge, taking a band people were chucking bottles of piss at.”

The pair also revealed that they had their own concerns about the notorious festival performance.
“Our biggest fear at the time was that we would get on the stage and no one would come," Cruz explained. "We thought everyone would protest and go off and see bands they actually liked.”
DiConcetto also revealed that fellow bands supported them.“Backstage, Slipknot and Rage Against the Machine were coming up to us and telling us how hardcore we were – how they wouldn’t have stayed out there". The key details that the band reveal are not only did they have their families backstage but also that someone threw a wheelchair at them. "Someone lost their mobility because they hated us so much!”

The band also shared their feelings about the festival with iD, pointing out one key issue that remains something of a problem. DiConcetto explains: "We were the only females on the main stage. I'd never thought about that. We were chicks filling a quota. Crazy."
As a final word, in an interview with Popjustice, the band also discussed their feelings about why their hostile response at Reading hastened the end of their degree. "After we played Reading we definitely felt that was our crowning achievement" said DiConcetto. "We weren’t going to beat that."
Reading Festival takes place 28-30 August. All we will say is that currently there are two spots to be filled on the main stage (just before Mumford) and headling the dance stage on 29 August. Expect someone to start a Change.org petition before the day is out...
