"You're so vain," sang Carly Simon in 1972, "you probably think this song is about you." For some people though - Eleanor Rigby, Caroline Kennedy, Geraldine the Scottish social worker - the song actually is about them.
Though it's the songwriter's prerogative to keep their song's subjects under wraps, occasionally - and, let's face it, naming the song after the person in question doesn't help - the truth slips through the gaps.
