While bands like The Killers and The Jonas Brothers are openly religious, there are many more who either rubbish religion completely or despise everything it stands for. Gigwise takes a look at a collection of bands and music stars who have shunned, mocked or slammed religion either in interviews, through their songs or artwork. Some are atheists, others express mild disapproval and at the other extreme there are anti-religious groups who vehemently slam the church, God and Jesus Christ. Beware, some examples are shocking...

In 1998, English rockers Cradle of Filth headed to Rome for a show and decided to have a day trip to the Vatican. Never ones to shy away from controversy, the band members were adorning 'I Love Satan' t-shirts at the time. Within moments they were surrounded by armed Italian police who were outraged. Singer Dani Filth produced his laminate stage pass to prove his identity but it rubbed salt into the wound as it depicted a bloodied female figure nailed to the cross. They were detained for an hour for questioning but were eventually set free to perform their gig.

- What about The Stranglers and their 1981 album Themeninblack which had the prefix of The Gospel According to... This album dealt with the concept that God is an extra terrestrial being and that therefore all religons are built on falsehood. The cover featured Da Vinci's The Last Supper as a gatefold sleeve and on it Judas Iscariot had been replaced by a Maninblack.

- Praise be to Dawkins! Only say the word and Hitchens will be there!
- It seems like RUSH has promoted rational thought and a bent against supernaturalism. They've never said they don't believe, outright; but, they seem very intelligent and rational.
- RUSH has said that they don't believe, both in interviews, and most recently and strongly on their album "Snakes and Arrows". Check out the song "Faithless", which, as it promises, is about not believing.
