You know those legendary places around the world: the towns with a sound, cities where the sounds of inhabitants are as much a part of the landscape as the streets and landmarks. These are the cities that inspire the best bands and the most influential waves of talent.

From the dark guitar sounds of Manchester to the ethereal weirdness of Reykjavik, from the classic indie of Sheffield to the essential hip-hop of Chicago and Detroit, from the pioneering electro sounds of Berlin to the bone-shaking grunge of Seattle, many of the world's major cities are responsible for giving us the very vest eras in music.

Here are 19 cities from around the world that have fathered some of the best music scenes of all time.

  • Manchester: Arguably the most influential musical city in the UK, the Peoples' Republic Of Mancunia has given us wave after wave of brilliant music, largely breeding legendary guitar bands in the form of Joy Division, The Smiths, Elbow, Oasis, Happy Mondays, New Order, Magazine, The 1975 and countless more.

  • Bristol: Despite being quite picturesque and lovely, Bristol is also the birthplace of the dark doomchild that is trip-hop and a whole lot of great electronica. One of the UK's major ports, the influx of sounds and cultures would later evolve into a breeding ground of creativity - giving the world the likes of Massive Attack, Tricky, Portishead and many more to this day.

  • Berlin: The German capital has attracted everyone from musical icons like Bowie and Nick Cave to generation after generation of electro pioneers to enjoy the unique personality of the city - a city with a schizophrenic energy, restless creativity, liberal approach to sex, art and partying, and the invigorating mix of old and new. The most exciting sounds in electronica and beyond can still be found there today.

  • New York: A city credited for giving us so much by the way of punk (The Ramones, Blondie), indie (The Strokes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Interpol, The National), dance (LCD Soundsystem, Liquid Liquid, anything on DFA) and pretty much every other genre - but NYC is the true beating heart of East Coast hip-hop. The free-flowing sounds, complex rhythms, sampling and poetic worldplay flow around the streets of the Metropolis, giving birth to wave after wave of pioneering giants like The Sugarhill Gang, Run DMC, Grandmaster Flash, De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest and Public Enemy, Beastie Boys and Nas.

  • Sheffield: It's pretty staggering just how many songs are about this cold town on the Don in South Yorkshire, let alone the sheer amount of legendary guitar artists it keeps on inspiring - but here are just a few: Arctic Monkeys, Pulp, Richard Hawley, Crookes, The Longpigs, Reverend & The Makers and more. It also played a pretty big part in synth pop, giving us the Human League, Heaven 17, the Thompson Twins, Wavestar and Cabaret Voltaire.

  • Chicago: The birthplace of Chiacgo house (Felix da Housecat, Fingers, Inc., Ron Hardy, Frankie Knuckles etc), but it's also pretty damn impressive that Chicago's soundtrack has pumped out some of the world's finest hip-hop from the likes of Kanye West, Twista, Common, Lupe Fiasco, Da Brat and loads, loads more.

  • Seattle: The North-West post-industrial city had already spawned some pretty solid folk and punk bands, but it wasn't until Sub Pop was founded that grunge arrived and the likes of Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden changed music history forever. The city still breeds a healthy scene, having since seen Death Cab For Cutie, Modest Mouse, Band Of Horses and Fleet Foxes all hail from Seattle.

  • Birmingham: There are three things you can rely on in Birmingham: a good curry, a good canal and some very heavy metal. Brummie music heroes included The Move, The Spencer Davis Group, The Moody Blues, Traffic and the Electric Light Orchestra (which is impressive) but the arrival of pioneers and innovators Black Sabbath put Birmingham on the map as the home of metal. Judas Priest, Napalm Death, half of Led Zeppelin and loads more since emerged from the scene. They also produced UB40, but we'll forgive them for that - as they also gave us Duran Duran, The Streets, Peace and Swim Deep.

  • Glasgow: Blimey, Scotland has been kind to us when it comes to music - and that's largely thanks to the musical community in Glasgow giving us everyone from old-school legends like Primal Scream, Orange Juice, Belle & Sebastian and Mogwai, through to the more fresh and exciting sounds of today like Errors, Chvrches, Franz Ferdinand and Twin Atlantic.

  • Nashville: Tennesse is the official 'Birthplace Of The Blues' and soaked in soul, it's the DNA of this town that keeps pumping out Southern legends. There are too many to mention, but some of the latest to benefit from the atmosphere and culture of the city are Kings Of Leon, while the likes of Jack White and The Black Keys have since relocated there to absorb the sounds.

  • Palm Desert: The home of the now legendary Coachella music festival, the scorching sun, dusty sands and insane desert mentality of the open planes of California have given rise to a certain type of madman musician and warped stoner rock - most notably Queens Of The Stone Age, Kyuss, Eagles Of Death Metal and more. Just listening to the guests on Josh Homme's Desert Sessions series and the many awesome acts from the Palm Desert Scene is like listening to sandstorms and rattle snakes.

  • Reykjavik: Maybe it's the volcanic climate, maybe it's the island's sense of independence, maybe it's the beautiful landscapes, or maybe it's just the fact that for a tiny population, Iceland has given us some of the best artists of all time. Thanks Reykjavik for Bjork, Sigur Ros, Amiina, Olof Arnalds and so many more.

  • Stockholm: Robyn! Icona Pop! Miike Snow! Niki & The Dove! Abba Yup, those Swedes from the capital are pretty good at classic and danceable shimmering pop. That's why we love it, but they also have a world renowned metal scene thanks to acts like Opeth, Bloodbath, Katatonia, Dismember and others.

  • Frankfurt: History says that the roots of trance music began in Germany, particularly in Frankfurt where local acts Sven Väth and DJ DAG (of Dance 2 Trance) first played a harder, deeper style of acid house that would come to dominate dancefloors around the world for the decade ahead.

  • Montreal: Blame Canada! For what? Essential Montral indie geniuses like Arcade Fire, Chromeo, Grimes, Wolf Parade, The Stills, Stars and The Dears. Oh, and Men Without Hats.

  • Berkeley: The California town with a thriving punk scene that produced Green Day, Rancid, Operation Ivy and a tonne more - while the legendary 924 Gilman Street club was instrumental in the rise of bands like AFI, Alkalkine Trio and others.

  • Athens: The scene in this Georgia town is the stuff of legend. How many towns can you name that have spawned the likes of REM, Of Montral, Danger Mouse, Vic Chesnutt, Drive-By Truckers, Neutral Milk Hotel and Bubba Sparxxx? Exactly.

  • Los Angeles: The star-studded City Of Angels has naturally always had a thriving music scene. It's obvious why, but here's a jaw-dropping list of just a fraction of the artists spawned: Sky Ferreira, Warpaint, Hole, The Beach Boys, 30 Seconds To Mars, Beck, Black Flag, The Doors, Deap Vally, Fear, Eagles, The Eels, Guns N Roses, Incubus, Linkin Park, System Of A Down. Man, we're now considering a move to LA.

  • Detroit: The town's booming motorcar economy created Motown Records and gave the world Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross & The Supremes, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, The Four Tops and others, while the town's falling fortunes and rundown streets inspired a generation of awesome punk before the town's hip-hop scene began to bloom - giving us Eminem, Insane Clown Posse, D12, J Dilla, Obie Trice and Danny Brown.
