Kelis is nothing if not original. On new album 'Kelis Was Here', Nas's wife shows the diversity that has helped her to keep her distinctive sound relatively fresh in the R&B pop world. All the usual topics are covered here, on 'Bossy' she reaffirms her role as a confident woman who's in control of what ever it is she's up to, while 'Fire' is an up-tempo, ragga infused medley featuring Spragga on the chorus. Nas features on the crunky, synthesised tale of dirty sex 'Blind Fold'.
All the styles selling at the minute are catered for, the chant of 'I Don't Think So' is reminiscent of the tunes Gwen Stefani released with Kelis' old production team the Neptunes and 'Weekend' is a typical party track while 'Trilogy' and 'Appreciate Me' are more traditional laid back R&B grooves.
'Little Star' sees Kelis hooking up with one half of Gnarls Barkley as Cee-Lo lays down the chorus for one of the more introspective moments on the album soon followed by the very accessible, heartfelt ditty of 'Living Proof'.
Last track 'Fuck Them Bitches' is a more hip hop sounding tune with Kelis rapping rather than singing, aiming lines at those bitches talking shit about her, "I don't really like you talking shit behind my back, and if you don't stop you might catch a little, uh".
Fans of Kelis should know what to expect by now and we can't imagine this album being of any disappointment. One for the ladies we reckon but it does exactly what it says on the tin, Kelis is here.
