More about:

Stubborn Heart finally return! Years after their critically-acclaimed debut, the duo are back with some broody, dark, electro pop on Made Of Static.

Opening with ‘Talking Gold’, the upbeat, danceable beat contrasts really nicely with the soft, melodic vocals and pan pipes that are so soft you might miss them. ‘Proves to Be’ is a brilliantly fun cut, more traditional drum sounds appear, as well as swelling, soaring synth over the top of an angular, mismatched beat. The huge bass-synth sounds continue, with window-shaking quality. The sheer power of the bass can be a little overwhelming, but the track soon fades out.

‘Against The Tide’ is another number with a wonky, jagged beat to it. The keys are off-beat, and the percussion and vocals give the track a really disorientated feel, in a fantastically-endearing way. The track builds and builds to an electronic crescendo; the keys, synths and drums sound like they could be straight from a Chemical Brothers album. ‘Mums The Word’ is the standout track on this album: it moves wildly from infectious, funky beats to soft, Frank Ocean-esque dreampop without sounding mismatched or out of place. ‘Points of View’ closes out the A-side with harmonious synths and delicate vocals that Stubborn Heart do so well.

'Everything Matters' is a track with soaring synth highs and pulsating electro beats. This theme continues throughout the B-side of this record - laidback electro pop with often lo-fi sounding beats delicately balance with shimmering vocals. It's stark in contrast to some of the faster tempo cuts on side A.

‘Drop The Ball’ is another real highlight, more moody synth is accompanied by bizarre sounding keys to bring about an almost gothic atmosphere. Luca Santucci’s vocals really take the centre stage throughout here, his range shines on a number of these tracks and his delivery is outstanding throughout. This, plus pitch-perfect production, make this album incredibly enjoyable. The highs and lows are balanced exceptionally, the bassy synths boom spectacularly and the vocals cut through with clarity. The vinyl pressing is a beauty too, mixed and pressed superbly.

A fantastic return from Stubborn Heart, after eight years. Their sound has matured like a fine wine - Made Of Static is the sort of intriguing electronica that would pair beautifully with an expensive Cabernet Sauvignon.
