A blossoming reinvention

Continuing to deliver the unexpected, cult favourites Black Country, New Road mark their return with Live At Bush Hall - an album of new works taken from recordings of their three back-to-back sold out shows in December 2022.

After the departure of frontman Isaac Wood, the band defied all odds, continuing and adapting as a six-piece collective. While their loss would be a huge creative hurdle for any band, they have risen to the challenge, coming together to highlight their musicianship without the need for a traditional frontman. Vocals are shared across the ensemble throughout the album, but maintain a strong sense of cohesion throughout.

Far from the grit and wit of their earlier tracks such as ‘Sunglasses’ and ‘Athens, France’, the band have truly reinvented themselves. Often showing a gentler side, their sound overall is much softer than their earlier work. As impressive as their previous chaotic musical breakdowns were – it’s clear that as they’ve grown into their sound and musicianship, this isn’t something which they need to hide behind. Just two years on from their debut For The First Time, Black Country, New Road are seemingly a different band, but what they have blossomed into is every bit as special.

"one of the greats of our generation..."

Mixed by PJ Harvey collaborator John Parish, the album sees the acoustics of the historic Bush Hall provide the perfect backdrop, creating an atmospheric blend that encapsulates the intimate live experience. From the energising ‘Up Song’ to the heart wrenching ‘I Won’t Always Love You’, this album takes you on an emotional journey that sees Black Country, New Road build upon their foundations as a collective and redefine their style with a striking sense of maturity.

The album closes with a reprise of opener ‘Up Song’ as the band echo “Look at what we did together”. A nod to their evolution, Live at Bush Hall is ultimately a celebration of all the band have achieved together up until now. Having built upon their strengths and grown together throughout their collaboration, Live at Bush Hall shows Black Country, New Road musically at their very best, and truly cements them as one of the greats of our generation.
