Bastille are on a roll. Four Brit award nominations under their belt and in terms of live performances have already got the iconic Ally Pally firmly ticked off with a sell out show. However; Somerset House in its own right is steeped in history, but; with new material to display and a birthday boy - the stage was well set for the London locals.
For frontman Dan Smith early on, the nerves were showing through opening number 'Bad Blood', but a couple tracks down the line and great performance of 'Poe't, all the nerves were easily shaken off. Accompanied by the quartet, the band were joined by a string quartet which unfortunately weren’t heard that often throughout the evening, but on tracks 'Laughter Lines' and latest single 'Oblivion' where it most mattered, both groups received a rapturous round of applause.
Mid-set, the band gave thanks to opening act Kyla La Grange. Ellie Goulding fans take note. The 27-year-old’s superb live vocals and instrument talent is a definite star in the making. To take the set into its latter stages, the crowd are treated to the brand new song 'Blame' which goes down a storm and shows Bastille are just about to get into their creative prime which could wet any fans appetite for their latest album.
From a treat to the crowd, frontman Smith has his own birthday treat (and cake) delivered by singer and friend Ella Eyre who joins the group for mashup cover 'No Angels'.
“We never thought this would end up a single!” jokes Smith before introducing penultimate track 'Of the Night' to send off the crowd in style before ending the night rightly with 'Pompei'i. If Bastille continue on their present course, the sky is the limit and rightly deserved.
