Foxes seems sincerely grateful to be at the Empire tonight, and has a feeling that this show is going to be the best of her Glorious tour.
Some of her first gigs took place in London, and three years later she’s back with a debut album, a Grammy and a devoted fan base. It’s a predominantly teenage crowd tonight and given that Foxes is drop dead gorgeous and suitably edgy (absolutely covered in sequins) it’s no surprise they find her so appealing.
She also sings a lot about being young and wild and free, and thereby attempts to embody this youthful exuberance in order to get the young crowd rared up. She’s a ball of energy and not a minute goes by where she isn’t jumping or skipping or hair flicking. The teens are putty in her hand; the girls beam and wave their arms enthusiastically and the boys in the front row thrust their finger hearts towards her.
For the most part, her vocals are very impressive, with 'Glorious' being the standout performance of the night. Remarkably she manages to maintain control of her voice in spite of all her gallivanting and spasmodic arm movements…but then the inevitable happens. All Foxes efforts to encourage the crowd to be ‘more hyper’ mean that by the time she gets to her biggest hits she’s absolutely knackered.
Foxes’s songs certainly deserve a lively performance, but a lack of refinement means that sadly, a strong voice is seriously compromised. Thanking everyone for buying her album proves to be a bit of a struggle alone - she’s totally out of breath. Then she’s faced with Grammy award winner 'Clarity'. She gives it her all but it’s pretty shaky and it’s a real shame. Thankfully, she manages to pull it together for the grand finale 'Let Go For Tonight' and leaves the stage with a smile even bigger than the one she came on with.
