In Gigwise’s humble opinion, Sebastien Tellier is solely responsible for one of the tunes of the decade in the shape of the masterpiece that is 2004’s ‘La Ritournelle’; a gentle building piano-led romantic song that oozes with emotion and lush arrangements. But, even for a man seemingly so erratic and brimming with ideas as Mr Tellier, his return to the fray in 2008 is a jaw-dropper. Teamed up with one half of Daft Punk on production duties, Guy Manuel de Homem-Christol, Tellier has dipped his foot into electronic music, and, put simply, ‘Sexual Sportswear’ is a beast of a tune. Part Clockwork Orange theme, part Junior Jack’s ‘Da Hype’, but overtly fluffy French electro, it’s a subtle triumph that brims with feeling and soul despite a lack of vocals or, well, shifting musical segues. Proof that sometimes the simplest things are best. Pick of the remixes? Easily Donovan’s edgier tech-tinged interpretation.
