The best new songs this week are a real mixed bag. It’s an eclectic mix that takes in Daughter’s new release, with all its beautiful harmonies, only to slap you in the face and make sure you’re paying attention with Eagles Of Death Metal’s latest fat riff fest.
Daughter - ‘Doing The Right Thing’
A precursor to their new album, which is due early next year, this song is a beautiful, yet melancholy meditation. The video depicts the isolation and desolation suffered by people with dementia. The track is thoughtful and delicate with minimal instrumentation used to maximum impact. Guitars echo Elena Tonra’s searching vocals in the chorus, and it makes for quietly powerful stuff.
Eaves - ‘Ceremony’
Eaves has revealed this formally unreleased track which will feature on the deluxe re-issue of his well received album What Green Feels Like. The guitar plucking troubadour from Leeds channels the great singer-songwriters of yore to produce an affecting piece of folk charm.
The Jaguar Club - ‘The Last of Night’ Brooklyn’s
Jaguar Club have released a single to ward off impending winter gloom. Opening with a cheering duo of jangling guitars, the song urges us to let the good times roll. It builds to a crescendo of soaring vocals, that recall Morrissey, and some lovely 80s synths that are hard to resist. Seriously cheering stuff, that should be played unapologetically loudly.
Estrons - ‘Make a Man’
Welsh band Estrons have landed a single this week that is difficult to ignore. This is partly because it’s a ferocious, rabid cut of indie rock, and partly because the video features lead singer Taliesyn Kallstrom breast feeding. The most striking thing remains the pure and unrelenting attitude.
Eagles of Death Metal - Silverlake (K.S.O.F.M)
After a five-year break, Eagles Of Death Metal have unleashed the not so subtly titled Zipper Down. And, quite frankly, its good to have the purveyors of all things debauched back. ‘Silverlake (K.S.O.F.M) is what we’ve all come to expect from the duo - unadulterated, hillbilly, riff=heavy filth: all in the name of fun of course.
Oscar - ‘Breaking My Phone’
New kid on the block Oscar’s DIY ascetic is fantastically realised in his new track ‘Breaking My Phone’. The scuzzy ditty has a loose slacker vibe, but don’t be fooled - it’s a stomping little number that’s likely to bring the Londoner to the fore. If you hear a Britpop influence, it could be down to Oscar reportedly studying sculpture at St Martins College.
