After gently and gradually disowning his former band ever since leaving last year, Zayn Malik has dealt One Direction a final blow: "I never really wanted to be in the band."

Malik parted ways with One Direction back in March of last year, and has been working on his debut solo album ever since. Last year, he told The Fader, "There was never any room for me to experiment creatively in the band. If I would sing a hook or a verse slightly R&B, or slightly myself, it would always be recorded 50 times until there was a straight version that was pop, generic as fuck, so they could use that version."

Now, in his first filmed interview since leaving the band (he cancelled a forthcoming appearance on The Graham Norton Show), Malik has told Zane Lowe: "I think I kinda always wanted to go from the first year. I never really wanted to be there in the band. I just gave it a go because it was there at the time, and when I realised the direction we were going in - mind the pun - with the music, I instantly realised it wasn't for me, because I realised I couldn't put any input in. How do you write a song from five people's perspective?"

He added, "I think the boys knew that in terms of the music, that wasn't my cup of tea. When I was leaving the band, they didn't want me to leave. But I'd already made up my mind at that point."

Earlier this year, Malik revealed the artwork for his debut solo single, 'Pillow Talk', saying that it's "pretty black and white" as to what the song's about. (Sex.)
