More about: Beachtape
Brighton-based, fuzzed-out quartet Beachtape have been making their unique mark on the independent music scene for the last couple of years. They’ve been churning out off-kilter, slacker, and truly lo-fi indie rock with a brilliantly laconic vocal, narrating everything from early 20s anxiety to the rollercoaster nature of life. Now releasing their EP Bigger Picture, the band are pensive and reflective, casting their gaze upwards and outwards.
Here the band take us through each song on Bigger Picture, track by track:
Somewhere Better
‘Somewhere Better’ was the last song we wrote for this EP. Written around the idea of something feeling so significant in the moment, but becoming so insignificant over time, and vice versa. We actually finished writing it the day before we went into the studio, it was super fresh but we really wanted to put it on this EP. Normally we spend a while on a song before we record so it was nice to go in with something so fresh. Due to coronavirus we haven’t even really had the chance to play it live yet but we can't wait.
Loose Ends
Our not very country, country song. We have been been playing this for about a year and always had it down in the set as ‘Country Song’, we never gave it a "real name" until after we recorded it. This was the first song we wrote from our new batch of material that we were stoked on. Also we love a cheesy guitar solo so hopefully everyone will enjoy that as much as us.
Think Like You
A short little banger, we wanted to make a song with straighter more angular guitars and a linear rhythm, rather than the loose jangly thang we fall upon. I really like the melody in this song too. Nothing too profound - what you hear is what you get.
Somebody Like Hugh
I guess this was my attempt of writing a love song of sorts. This is also a fun song to play live, and the oldest song on the EP. It ended up being called ‘Somebody Like Hugh’ because when we demo’d it we put a picture of Hugh Grant looking sexy as the photo. And it stuck. Maybe a regrettable decision but we have never prided ourselves on our ability to name songs - or write them.
Bigger Picture is out now.
