Behind The Scenes of Maverick Thinker

It's a big big month for albums, and coming on this, the first weekend of March, is William The Conqueror's new offering Maverick Thinker: a sprawling, loose dance of guitar, bass and drums. Landing, too, is a debut novel from frontman and lyrical alchemist Ruarri. A project of the same name, it's being read back week by week on a special podcast.

If all of that wasn't enough, then know this: the album is really rather good. Towering and splendid, it's an unspooling tape of downbeats and uppers. Here, we've been let into the world of William The Conquerors' making of...a behind the scenes of Maverick Thinker.

See the gallery below.

Maverick Thinker arrives 5 February via Chrysalis Records.

  • Others that have wiped their feet here include, Nirvana, Rage Against The Machine, Fleetwood Mac, Neil Young and Bob Dylan

  • Touring (remember that?) before you make a record is always healthy. But you don’t want to be too polished. As Richard Thompson said – take away the rough edges and you’ll have lots of notes, but no music

  • Beats per minute: To click-track or not to click-track? Usually not, but it’s good to have an open mind. Harry is a human click track anyway

  • Recording live is all about communication

  • Good tip for making an album, and for life in general – become friends with a wizard. Ours is called Joseph Lorge

  • Flesh on the bones. You know it’s going to be a good day when the Vox comes out

  • One of many check lists

  • Time to play it to someone else and make sure we haven’t gotten lost in our blissful little studio bubble. You get a new perspective on everything the moment you press play

  • 16th March 2020. With three days of recording still to go, the studio closed its doors and we were all sent home. It was somewhat out of the blue because of how little we’d been plugged in to the news that week. I took this picture of the universe not being very subtle on Venice beach, the morning we left for lockdown

  • Touch down in our LA digs. That’s our friend Luke Kellet making a cameo
