More about: Depeche ModeAndy Fletcher
Andy Fletcher, founding member and keyboard player of Depeche Mode, has passed away at the age of 60. The band made a statement on social media last night (26 May 2022) that read: “We are shocked and filled with overwhelming sadness with the untimely passing of our dear friend, family member, and bandmate Andy ‘Fletch’ Fletcher. Fletch had a true heart of gold and was always there when you needed support, a lively conversation, a good laugh, or a cold pint. Our hearts are with his family, and we ask that you keep them in your thoughts and respect their privacy in this difficult time.”

Born in 1961 in Nottingham, Fletcher was raised in Basildon where he formed Depeche Mode in 1980 with Martin Gore and Vince Clarke, taking on the name after Dave Gahan joined as their frontman. Fletcher remained a consistent member of the band until his passing this week, playing on all 14 of their studio albums.
Since Depeche Mode made the tragic announcement last night, musicians have been paying tribute to the late musician. Pet Shop Boys spoke of his warmth and love of electronic music while Alison Moyet recalled growing up with him in Basildon. Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark described him as “a beautiful person in an amazing band”.
We’re saddened and shocked that Andy Fletcher of Depeche Mode has died. Fletch was a warm, friendly and funny person who loved electronic music and could also give sensible advice about the music business. pic.twitter.com/tOMQaeaFoc

Officially credited with keyboards and backing vocals in Depeche Mode, speculation over his true role in the band became a running joke amongst fans. In Depeche Mode’s documentary 101, he famously said: "Martin's the songwriter, Alan's the good musician, Dave's the vocalist, and I bum around”. However, the outpouring of love for Fletcher following last night’s news shows the significance of his role not just in Depeche Mode, but at the heart of electronic music itself. Whether on keyboards, handling the management side of the band or keeping the peace between Gahan and Gore, we would not have Depeche Mode without Andy Fletcher.
Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and bandmates at this time.
