Walking us through their debut EP
A band we're keeping a close eye on are Divorce. The four-piece are swiftly rising through the ranks of the ulimate ones to watch, merging live hype with recorded intrigue as only a couple of singles seemed to have everyone obsessed.
Now releasing their debut EP, Get Mean, all the promise heard on early tracks has been doubled down on and well and truly delivered with a four-track sprint that screams your new fave band have arrived.
But don't take it from us... The band themselves are taking us through the release, track by track...
'Services'
"This song is kind of nursery-rhyme like in its simplicity, and I think we wanted it to be juvenile. The arrangement is simple and the vocals are playful, but simultaneously we wanted the guitars to rip right through sonic innocence and give the track a gnarlier edge. It’s sort of meant to be a coming-of-age track, like our homage to tracks like ‘Roadrunner’ by The Modern Lovers, but with sort of a grim aftertaste. It was the first track we all recorded together as a band so this track will always be a very special one."
'Pretty'
"This is maybe our darkest song in some ways, inspired by the brutal court of public opinion; namely the notoriety of Facebook comment wars. I think we wanted to be careful to not sound like we were tackling too big a subject or sound undermining to anyone so we just wrote it as a love song between two people in the throes of feeling ostracised by the rest of the world, and we wanted the instrumental to be a real mixture of warm and unsettling sounds. We also realised after it was written that the chorus sounds very much like a Sonny and Cher song, which we think is incredibly funny seeing as we’re a double act too so it sort of looks like we’re parodying them!"
'Checking Out'
This was written as part of a 5-day long songwriting experiment, where you write a song each day, and writing like this really encourages you to get creative. We didn’t think we'd ever be writing a country murder ballad but it’s actually one of our favourite songs to play live, it really feels like you can lose yourself in the obscure narrative of it. We wanted it to feel kind of like the release of listening to a really doomy metal track with violent lyrics; it’s sort of comical in a way because it takes you so far out of your own head. It’s probably the most shameless country banger that we’ve got and people seemed to take to it well, it’s a lot of fun that audiences have started singing it with us at shows.
'That Hill'
"This song is probably one of the closest thematically to all of our hearts and feels particularly poignant to play live when we’re all worn out by the relentlessness of our worlds. It’s basically about how thankless doing what you love can be at times, and it’s very us to summarise this into a hooky little country-western chorus. We felt it appropriate to be the final single because it rounds off the record with a sobering, more reflective song, which we jumbled together after a particularly stressful studio session, but just so happened to love in its entirety. It’s a love song to music as well as it is a fatigued surrender to the (sometimes) unhealthy hold it can have on all of us. Let’s just say, Divorce is none of our first rodeos!"
