All too frequently, Kanye West is mocked and maligned, his genius as an artist undermined by those threatened by the unapologetic self-confidence of a black man. But he is not discriminated against, no matter what he might have claimed in a recent interview, for being heterosexual. Sorry Kanye.
The rapper took part in a two hour-long interview with SHOWstudio on Tuesday (6 October), during which he opined, "I feel like I got discriminated in fashion for not being gay." *cue tumbleweed*
Thankfully, the eye roll-inducing comments ended there, and West went onto discuss the discrimination against LGBT people in the music industry. "You definitely get discriminated in music if you are gay," he said. "It takes amazing talents to break down barriers."

He continued, "Everyone thought that when Frank Ocean dropped that [Ocean wrote an open letter detailing how he had fallen in love with a man], it was going to be bad for his career. I feel like it's so cliche to speak about him as it related to this subject, but there are people who broke the ground and he broke the ground. The people that break the stereotypes make history."
West also spoke about Caitlyn Jenner, the step-parent of his wife Kim Kardashian, who came out as a transgender woman earlier this year. "The first thing I thought about was a black radio show host maybe possibly making jokes because the black culture is generally homophobic," he said.
"Then it was like, ‘Fuck what people say. Fuck what people think.' I feel proud to be in a family that has so many people breaking ground for generations to come." Amen to that.
