The wait is nearly over, Gorillaz fans. Jamie Hewlett has confirmed that the band's new album will be released next year, and "it's going very well."
The band released their fourth album, The Fall, back in 2010, but went on hiatus shortly afterwards. Damon Albarn subsequently revealed to The Guardian that he and Hewlett had fallen out, and future projects were "unlikely." Over the past year or so though, things have taken a much more positive turn.
Since early 2014, both Hewlett and Albarn have been teasing the possibility of new material, and were said to have begun starting recording last month. In a new interview, Hewlett has confirmed that the new album will be released next year.
Speaking to DIY, he said, "That’s next year. I’m working on it at the moment, and it’s going very well. I’m very excited. I don’t want to say too much about it, but I’m at that phase of experimentation."
He added, "What I try not to do when I’m working in this creative period, the cooking of the mess, is go to other peoples’ exhibitions and look at other peoples’ work. I close my eyes, and don’t want to know what anyone else is doing. Doing that has kind of ruined the creative process for me in the past, and I don’t want to let that happen again."
Speaking to NME last year, Albarn said that the pair's high-profile fall-out had eventually led to a "healthier" relationship.
