Chairlift have revealed the latest single, ‘Romeo’, from their upcoming album, Moth.
The Chicago duo released the brilliant ‘Cha-Ching’ in October, and are set to release their full album, Moth, on 22 January.
‘Romeo’ tells the tale of the Greek heroine, Atlanta, who was abandoned at birth but later becomes an excellent runner. Her father, who catches wind of his daughter’s talents, demands that she return home to marry. Atlanta disapproves of his demands and announces that she would only marry the man who can beat her in a race. Those who lose will be beheaded.
After many races and subsequent beheadings, Atlanta loses to Melanion, who deceitfully throws apples into her path to distract her. ‘Romeo’ is told from Atlanta’s point of view as the race is about to start. Accordingly, ‘Romeo’ is a musically aggressive, autotuned delight.
Speaking of ‘Romeo’, the ‘Bruises’ writer and frontwoman, Caroline Polachek said, "I started studying opera two years ago, and immediately fell in love with Handel. I tried to channel that same stately, baroque feeling in the chorus of Romeo."
