Quentin Tarentino has admitted that Ennio Morricone's movie score for The Hateful Eight was originally composed for The Thing.
Talking at a post-screening Q&A session with Interstellar director Christopher Nolan in Los Angeles, the Tennessee director stated that most of the music Ennio Morricone created for his new film was in fact written for John Carpenter's 1982 classic The Thing.
“I had a little voice in my head saying, ‘This material deserved an original score.’ And I’ve never thought that way before, I’ve never had that voice before. I didn’t ever want to trust a composer with the soul of my movie,” Tarentino said about his reasons to reach out to Morricone.

Upon meeting, it was clear to Tarentino that the iconic composer would not have enough time to create and write a new score for the film, which was already shot. Tarantino told Morricone he needed the music within a month's time. Upon hearing this, the composer balked.
“And he’s like, ‘This is not going to work. I’m working with Giuseppe Tornatore, and he just finished shooting the other day, and I’ve got to do his score, this is not going to work. I was told a lot of things that weren’t correct, and I’m really sorry.’”
However, Tarentino was so adamant for using a Morricone film theme that he suggested using music from the Italian composer's score for The Thing. As a majority of the music written for John Carpenter's 1982 iconic horror film was unused, Tarentino's idea to the composer was a reasonable proposal.

Paraphrasing Morricone, Tarentino added: “…’I wrote a whole orchestra score [for The Thing], and I wrote a whole synthesizer score, because I knew that was what [John Carpenter] was used to, and I gave him everything, and the only thing he used in the entire movie was the synthesizer main title [track].’
"So, he goes, ‘What I can do is I’ll write the theme… and with the other Thing pieces of music, now you have your original score that’s never been used in a movie before.’”
The Hateful Eight will be released in cinemas on 25 December, and the soundtrack will be release on vinyl via Jack White's Third Man Records.
