The forthcoming memorial service for Motorhead's Lemmy Kilmister, who died at the end of 2015, is set to be streamed worldwide. There will also be a private funeral for friends and family.
Kilminister, generally known simply by his first name Lemmy, died on 28 December at the age of 70, just days after being diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer. The frontman had suffered from health problems for several years, and Motorhead cancelled a European tour while he dealt with complications arising from diabetes.
His bandmates announced the news of his death with the following statement: "There is no easy way to say this…our mighty, noble friend Lemmy passed away today after a short battle with an extremely aggressive cancer. He had learnt of the disease on December 26th, and was at home, sitting in front of his favorite video game from The Rainbow which had recently made it’s way down the street, with his family. We cannot begin to express our shock and sadness, there aren’t words."
They added: "We will say more in the coming days, but for now, please…play Motörhead loud, play Hawkwind loud, play Lemmy’s music LOUD. Have a drink or few. Share stories. Celebrate the LIFE this lovely, wonderful man celebrated so vibrantly himself."
Now, separate from the private service that's set to be held for his friends and family, there will also be a public memorial service, which will be streamed live on the band's official YouTube channel between 1am and 5am GMT this Saturday (9 January).
"Wherever you are, PLEASE get together and watch the service with fellow Motorheadbangers and friends," the band asked fans in a statement.
"Go to your favourite bar, or your favourite club, make sure they have access to an internet connection and toast along with us. Or simply invite your pals around and celebrate Lemm's life at home. Whatever your venue, and however you can, let's be sure to gather globally on Saturday, January 9 and celebrate the life of our dear friend and irreplaceable icon."
Meanwhile, a campaign to get Motorhead to No.1 has started gathering steam.
