Nick Cave has announced his new studio album, Skeleton Tree, which will be released alongside a 3D film - delving into the “tragic backdrop of the writing and recording of the album.”
While the press release hasn’t gone into detail, it’s likely that this “tragic backdrop” is the death of Cave’s 15-year-old son, Arthur, who fell from a cliff in Brighton last year after taking LSD. At the time, Cave and his wife Susie Bick released a statement describing Arthur as “our beautiful, happy loving boy.”
This will be Cave’s first new material since the tragedy occurred, though recording began in late 2014. It’ll be released alongside a film, One More Time With Feeling, which was directed by Andrew Dominik and will screen in more than 650 cinemas worldwide on 8 September. Skeleton Tree will be released the following day.
“Filmed in black-and-white and colour,” says the press release, “in both 3D and 2D, the result is stark, fragile and raw, and a true testament to an artist trying to find his way through the darkness.”
Skeleton Tree is set for release on 9 September.
