Katy Perry nearly drowns and falls off a cliff in 'Rise' video

The song will serve as NBC's Olympics coverage theme song

Katy Perry has a pretty tough time of it in the new video for ‘Rise’ - and it’s actually pretty inspiring.

Within the space of a few minutes, the singer has to haul around a huge uncooperative parachute, nearly falls off a cliff, then nearly drowns. And yet, as the song’s triumphant lyrics attest to, she still manages to rise.

With a backdrop of America’s Snow Canyon and Sand Hollow State Parks, the video, directed by Paul Gore and produced by Matthew Ayriss and Danny Lockwood, is visually stunning.

If it all sounds a little cheesy to you, you might be pleasantly surprised.

‘Rise’ is being used for NBC’s coverage of the 2016 Olympics, which are being held in Rio de Janeiro this month.
