Brighton psych-surf trio Strange Cages have unveiled a video to the track ‘Bam Bam Boom’ which is taken from their debut EP, Ego-Killer. You can watch it first on Gigwise below.
The band have been simmering on the underground over the past couple of years, and first came onto our radar back when they first started through word-of-mouth. They were hotly-tipped thanks to their fiercely energetic live shows in Brighton.
For a while, though, their strong live sound wasn’t available on record, and the few scratchy YouTube videos they had out, meant it was difficult to communicate how good they were.
But now, with the help of up-and-coming producer Margo Broom (Fat White Family, Phobophobes) who sat at the controls, the band have an EP that gives justice to their sound. Technically, they’ve arrived on the same playing field as the more established bands they’ve recently supported, which impressively include King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, and Night Beats.
‘Bam Bam Boom’ is the lead promo cut from this EP and takes cues from several other psych revivalists. As such, Strange Cages land themselves in a pretty saturated psych scene. But they’ve got a knack for superb catchy melodies that shine brightly underneath all the fuzz and Ty Segall-esque deranged attitude - they're likely to make a big impact.
The lo-fi video to this superb track is directed by Todd McConnochie and is influenced by 70s Kraut with swirling visuals and acid-fuelled hysteria.
If you like what you hear go and check them out live. Strange Cages headline the Shacklewell Arms on 26 August.
