WENNINK make a beautiful connection between pop and avant-garde electronica on their newest track, ‘Somebody Else’. You can listen to it first on Gigwise below.
Discordant loops and tones come together with dark and tortured vocals before the overdriven bass envelopes you .
WENNINK first caught our attention when singer Oliver Wennink was supporting The Weeks in Brixton Windmill and despite sounding nothing like them - (he’s more like Thom Yorke circa The Eraser) we were impressed by his live show, and felt like he was sure to be recognised by a wide audience for his craft in a matter of months, and so he has.
Operating as a duo with producer Matt Owen brought into the fold, the debut self-titled EP, which combines melancholic ambience with rushing surges of electronica, attracted Radio 1 who have been playing some of it. Moreover, the EP is in the Best Produced / Engineered Record category of the Unsigned Music Awards which is being held at The Troxy in London tomorrow. The final vote in this category was cast by Aamir Yaqub, a GRAMMY Award-winning producer/engineer for his work on Rihanna’s Unapologetic.
This latest cut, which can be listened to above, pushes the electronic element to the forefront - it’s more unhinged and frenetic than anything WENNINK's released yet and hints at a possible allegiance with the likes of Sonar festival in the future. It shows WENNINK are ill-content to settle on whatever level they arrive at and continually push to new extraordinary sonic heights.
Their next EP, Ruined, is set to be released on house producer and DJ John Monkman's new label Beesemyer early next year. Monkman has had his records released on the world's biggest and most cutting edge labels for over a decade including Kompakt, Get Physical, Anjunadeep, Suara and Rebellion and has now started his own record label.
