8 January 2017 would’ve marked David Bowie’s 70th birthday. In a bid to bring Bowie fans together, Brixton’s O2 Academy hosted a tribute, charity birthday gig.
Alongside thousands of fans, a large number of celebrities and musicians showed up, wanting to perform and celebrate the late icon’s stunning career
Actor Gary Oldman and Bowie’s old band hosted the evening, and after a 25-year-long friendship, Oldman brought all Bowie-loving fans, friends and family to celebrate in unity at the late-singer’s 70th birthday.
La Roux, Tom Chaplin, Simon Le Bon and even Spandau Ballet’s Tony Hadley turned up to celebrate Bowie’s personality and talent.
Born in Brixton, David Bowie’s legacy have turned the south London area into a memorial for David Bowie. A mural for the Ziggy Stardust singer is still covered in flowers, a year after Bowie’s passing.
Duran Duran’s Simon Le Bon performed 'Let’s Dance' next to the London community Gospel Choir. 'Ashes To Ashes', 'All The Young Dudes', 'Life On Mars' and more were performed across the evening of tributes.
Alongside the tribute event, Brixton has welcomed a walking tour of the London area, featuring places that Bowie visited, as well as songs and stories of his upbringing in Brixton.
The celebration came just a day after a BBC documentary revealed that Bowie only found out his liver cancer was terminal three months before his death. He was shooting the music video for 'Lazarus' at the time.
The tribute charity event was one of multiple that will take place over the coming months. With tribute gigs in New York, Los Angeles, Sydney and Tokyo, it seems London is only the start of the celebration of what would have been Bowie’s 70th birthday.
Thanks for having me. The golden years are gone but the music lives on. Happy Birthday to the best mate I never had https://t.co/nB5kXTtl7C
